Ah, freshers’ week. The dizzying blend of excitement, nerves, and questionable fancy dress choices. Looking back, I realise there were a few things I wish I’d known before stepping foot on campus. Hopefully, sharing these lessons will help you navigate the chaos and make the most of your first week (and beyond!).
Packing Essentials You Can’t Forget
Comfortable Shoes are Your Best Friend
Seriously. You’ll be doing a LOT of walking, standing in queues, and potentially dancing until the early hours. Blisters are not a good look, or a good feeling. Trust me on this one, I learned the hard way. Those cute boots? Maybe save them for a less intense occasion.
Don’t Overpack (But Don’t Underpack Either)
Easier said than done, I know. Aim for versatility. A few key outfits that can be dressed up or down, and definitely bring a coat for those unpredictable evenings. British weather, eh? Leave room for all the free stuff you’ll inevitably acquire! Free pizza, free pens, free EVERYTHING! It’s like Christmas, but with more students.
Med Kit Essentials
Paracetamol, plasters, antiseptic wipes, and anything you regularly use. You don’t want to be scrambling for basic supplies when you’re feeling under the weather. And let’s be honest, with all the new germs floating around, a little precaution goes a long way. Maybe throw in some cough drops too, just in case. You never know when you’ll lose your voice from all that singing (or shouting).
Navigating the Social Scene
Don’t Feel Pressured to Do Everything
There’s a LOT going on. It’s okay to skip a night out, stay in and read, or just chill with your flatmates. Pace yourself! Freshers’ week is a marathon, not a sprint. You don’t want to burn out before lectures even start, do you?
Be Open to Meeting New People
Talk to everyone! Introduce yourself in your lectures, in your accommodation, at society events. You never know who you might connect with. Strike up conversations in the queue for coffee, compliment someone’s outfit. It’s amazing how a simple “Hi” can lead to a great friendship. Seriously, you never know.
It’s Okay if You Don’t Click with Everyone
Not every friendship will be a lifelong bond, and that’s perfectly fine. Focus on building genuine connections with people you enjoy being around. Don’t force it! It’s totally normal not to vibe with everyone. There are tons of other people to meet during freshers’ week, and beyond! And hey, sometimes the best friendships come when you least expect them.
Practical Tips for Surviving Freshers’ Week
Learn How to Do Laundry (Before You Run Out of Clean Clothes)
Seriously. Find out where the laundry room is, how to use the machines, and what detergents you need. Your future self will thank you. And your flatmates will thank you too. Trust me, no one wants to be around someone who smells like they haven’t washed in a week. Plus, clean clothes just make you feel better, right?
Budget Wisely
It’s easy to get carried away with all the social events and free stuff. Set a budget and stick to it. There are plenty of free or low-cost activities available. Student discounts are your friend! Take advantage of them whenever you can. Every little bit helps when you’re trying to stretch your loan as far as it can go. Ramen noodles, anyone?
Know Where to Get Help
Familiarise yourself with the student support services available at your university. They’re there to help with everything from academic issues to mental health concerns. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you’re struggling. Seriously, that’s what they’re there for. It’s better to ask for help than to suffer in silence. Your university wants to see you succeed!
Looking After Yourself
Stay Hydrated
This is especially important if you’re drinking alcohol. Water is your friend. Make sure to chug a glass of water before bed, and keep a bottle by your bedside. Your head will thank you in the morning (especially after those Freshers’ week nights out!). Plus, staying hydrated is just good for you in general. Glow up from the inside out!
Eat Something (Other Than Pizza)
Late-night takeaways are tempting, but try to incorporate some healthy meals into your diet. Your body will thank you for it. Even something as simple as a piece of fruit or a salad can make a difference. And hey, maybe try cooking with your flatmates! It’s a great way to bond and learn new skills (and save money!).
Get Enough Sleep
Easier said than done, but try to prioritize sleep. You’ll be much better equipped to handle everything if you’re well-rested. Power naps are your friend during freshers’ week! Even 20 minutes can make a difference. Plus, who wants to miss out on all the fun because they’re too tired? Not me, that’s for sure.
Final Thoughts
So there you have it. A few things I wish I knew before my own freshers’ week at university. It’s an amazing opportunity to meet new people, explore your university, and start your journey as a student. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, but remember to look after yourself and have fun! It goes by faster than you think. Now go out there and make some memories (and maybe take some photos so you can cringe at them later)!
